It was a perfect night. The snow in its majestic grace silenced the bustle of Butler and 54th and cast a cozy backdrop for our festivities. Friends of the shop and curious guests crowded around our humble stage with champagne in hand and witnessed history in the making.
To celebrate three years in business, our fearless leader Marissa Vogel launched the first of a new monthly sex-talk series. And because nothing this woman does is half-assed, she kicked off the series with one of the most followed sex-educator and influencer on the internet, Zoë Ligon, who is also the proprietor of "sex-posi" sex toy store, Spectrum Boutique. Joining Zoë was Pittsburgh's own Tatiana Farfan-Narcisse, who is herself a sex-positive advocate and dancer at a local strip club.
The two powerhouses of femme glory had all 40+ of us enraptured with their frank and no-holds-barred answers to questions submitted by event-goers. Topics varied from practical how-to questions, like how to familiarize yourself with a strap-on for the first time; to relationship advice, like how to introduce the idea of opening up the relationship to your long-term partner.
Zoë pulled from her many years of being a mouthpiece on healthy relationships and sex advice and offered technical insights and educational resource suggestions. Tatiana's perspectives came from the School of Experience, connecting on an emotional level with many in the room who related to her honest recollections.
In one hour, a community was established. The reception of both speakers was one of relief and intrigue - many remarked that the questions covered were ones they've had as well. Seeing others recognize that they were not alone in their sexual curiosities was the best birthday present we could have received.
"Let's Talk About Sex" will occur every month at Calligramme featuring different speakers. The need for frank discussions about intimate matters was apparent, and we intend to nurture and grow this community as much as we can. In this climate of hyper-awareness surrounding sexual encounters, it's so important for people to take ownership of their education. It's important to share your stories with others in conversation so that no one lives in isolation. Calligramme is honored to help facilitate that conversation.
NEXT EVENT: Join us again on January 13th, 7:00-9:00 pm when we talk kink and power relationships. Stay tuned for more details!
